Personal data means data relating to a person who can be identified on the basis of such data or on the basis of such data and other information to which the organisation has or will have access. PDPA includes personal data stored in both electronic and non-electronic formats. It includes various requirements for the collection, use, disclosure and maintenance of personal data in Singapore. A data protection regime is necessary to protect personal data from misuse and to maintain individual trust in the organizations that manage their data. The provisions of the DNC register entered into force on 2 January and the main data protection rules on 2 July. The Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) provides a basic standard for the protection of personal data in Singapore. It complements sectoral legal and regulatory frameworks such as the Bank Act and the Insurance Act. The amendments to the PDPA came into force in stages as of February 1. It also provides for the establishment of a national register DNC (Do Not Call). Individuals can register their phone numbers in Singapore with DNC registration to choose not to receive unsolicited telemarketing messages from organizations.
Parties to civil proceedings relating to PDPA may also rely on the Rules of Procedure of the General Court, Order 105. Organizations are required to comply with the various data protection obligations when carrying out activities related to the collection, use or disclosure of personal data.
